When Apple Says You Need a New Logic Board, Get a Second Opinion

An expensive logic board replacement isn’t always the only solution

If Apple has told you that your MacBook needs a new logic board, don’t panic — and don’t assume that your MacBook is beyond repair.

Apple is very good at replacing faulty assemblies. But replacing a logic board and repairing one are two very different things.

When a MacBook won’t start, Apple may try diagnostic procedures, key combinations or a firmware revive using DFU mode. If these attempts fail, you may be told that the logic board needs replacing, potentially at a cost of hundreds of pounds.

But a failed recovery attempt doesn’t necessarily mean the logic board is irreparable. And a fault that requires an entire board replacement under Apple’s repair approach may sometimes be traced to an individual component and repaired.

Here’s what I’d recommend

1. Don’t panic Your MacBook may be recoverable without replacing the logic board.
2. Don’t commit to an expensive replacement just yet First establish whether the diagnosis has ruled out other possibilities.
3. Get an independent expert opinion Choose someone who understands MacBook electronics and can investigate whether a repair is possible at component level.

Why choose UK Mac Repair?

At UK Mac Repair, we specialise exclusively in MacBooks. We approach faults differently from a repair service that relies primarily on replacing complete assemblies.

As a degree-qualified electronics engineer, I investigate faults at component level wherever possible. A faulty logic board may contain hundreds of components, and identifying the actual cause of a failure can sometimes avoid the need for an expensive replacement.

Our approach is to repair wherever reasonably possible, rather than replace by default. This can save you money and, in suitable cases, help preserve the data on your existing logic board.

Of course, not every logic board can be repaired economically, and sometimes replacement really is the best option. We will explain what we find and provide a quote before proceeding.
