You need a screen repair if you see:
  1. Cracks: Curved lines and blacked out areas
  2. Single pixel lines or wider stripes
  3. Stage light effect: Alternating bright and dark at the foot of the screen
  4. Image affected by screen angle
It may not be a screen issue if you see:
  1. Black screen. Can be a logic board fault
  2. Screen flickering. Can be a logic board fault

I can help with diagnosis.

Two Options
  1. Recommended. Replacement of the LCD panel.  4 day turnaround. Installed into your existing MacBook lid (or another genuine Apple lid if damaged). The LCD panel is sourced from the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). i.e. LG make the screens for Apple and this is an LG panel of the same specification. TrueTone feature is retained.
  2. Quickest. Install of a customer provided screen. 3 – 4 hour turnaround. I provide a fitting service for screens supplied by a customer (new or used, genuine or aftermarket). £50 for MacBooks without angle sensors. £80 for models requiring supply and calibration of an angle sensor.

Explanation

The recommended option is No. 1 because it is the highest quality solution with 12 months warranty. It retains top quality, reliable Apple parts. i.e. backlight, camera, light sensor, hinges and costs approx. 20% less than aftermarket screens.

The quickest option is No. 2 because a new aftermarket screen can be picked up immediately. Purchase, collection and fitting typically takes 3 – 4 hours from start to finish.

    1. Purchase online on the ACCUPART website. Search by model number e.g. A2337
    2. Email them immediately to stop them sending by overnight post and to request quote to extend warranty to 12months. Don’t phone.
    3. Pick up at the Trafford Park warehouse (open Monday – Friday 9am – 1230pm, 130pm – 4pm). I can arrange quick courier pickup (+ £50). Further details below
    4. Phone me 30 minutes prior to arrival at UK MAC REPAIR to have it fitted while you wait

Where to buy a screen
  1. New genuine Apple screens are only available from Apple or authorised resellers. SYNC is an authorised reseller located on a technology park in Monsall, M40 5BP. Phone them with the MacBook serial number and they quote to fit you a genuine Apple screen at Apple prices. They will need to order it in.
  2. Used genuine Apple screens can be purchased on Ebay. Look for pre-owned and check its a genuine Apple screen.
  3. Aftermarket (non genuine) screens are available on Ebay marked as new. They all have Apple logos. e.g. LCD4LAPTOP will DHL you a screen next day.
ACCUPART IN TRAFFORD PARK

If you need a screen urgently in Manchester you can purchase an aftermarket screen online on the ACCUPART website and you can pick it up at their warehouse in Trafford Park M17 1PZ before 4pm. Website & Email only. Phones are not answered. Warranty is strictly 90 days. They take no responsibility for any failure after 90 days from purchase. The website indicates you can pay for an extended warranty although there is no selection box on the website to take this. Email them. When visiting to pick up the screen ring the door bell before entering the waiting area otherwise you might wait all day.

APPLE and authorised resellers

Apple is known for high quality screens. Sadly their prices are as high as their quality and they are only available from Apple or an authorised reseller. If you have bought a new MacBook it probably is worth getting it on to AppleCare to take advantage of the replacement service in the event of an accident for approx. £80 per event.

Aftermarket screens are far cheaper and look the same and can be purchased from a variety of sources including Ebay and Amazon.

Search by model number and colour. e.g. “A2337 space grey”.

However, it is debatable if they are as durable and reliable as the original screen. If they stop working after their typical 90 day warranty, even when there is no visible cause like a dent, chip or crack, there is little recourse other than to argue the quality and durability requirements of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 which may only get settled in court.

You can install a screen yourself but it involves removing approx. 40 screws with 5 different screwdrivers. You never need to remove the logic board but you do need to remove the aerial assembly and sometimes the speakers. Some models have screen angle sensors that need replacement and recalibration with any change of screen hardware. Calibration requires specialist electronic equipment so it is simply not economical for a once only use.
