Neither of these causes means your logic board is a write off – it can be repaired by a skilled electronic engineer and the MacBook can continue a long and happy life.
Apple’s Diagnosis Method
I believe Apple [or their authorised dealers] are only looking for one thing:
- A liquid stain or a moisture indicator turned red so they can declare the warranty void
They will then quote you a massive fee to repair it and hope you choose to buy a new Macbook from them instead.
Now do you see why they insist on you visiting the store?
The Apple staff are not electronic engineers, they are salespeople and the only way they can repair your Macbook is to completely replace the logic board. That is the most expensive option and their list of rules says they must replace the keyboard and trackpad too! Effectively they are disposing of everything except the screen. The logic boards they use are ones that have been repaired in china.
My Diagnosis Method
I take the logic board out of the case and examine both sides visually under a microscope and make some voltage measurements to determine where the fault lies.
I make an assessment of the amount of work required to fix the problem and make a fixed price quote which I email and discuss with you.
If the keyboard and trackpad are still working I don’t replace them – this can save a lot of expense.
With your acceptance of my quote I then fix it for that price whether it takes me 3 hours or 30 hours.
