Urgent help when it’s had a drink it shouldn’t have

What to do now

If liquid (even a single rain drop) reaches the logic board it can cause severe damage within minutes. Liquids conducts electricity and electrolysis (corrosion) occurs instantly eating away at metalic parts like component legs and solder and depositing it elsewhere.  What you may see are unexpected shutdowns, a flickering screen or even a complete failure. It is worthwhile to try to reduce the chance of liquid reaching the logic board. Here’s how:

1. MacBook closed? Leave it that way – its the most powered down state and corrosion happens slowly
2. Disconnect the charger
3. Macbook running? Press and hold the power key for 10 seconds to shut it down then close the lid
4. Place the MacBook on its edge with the hinge highest (like a tent but not more than 2cm open)

Why Apple Can’t Help (and Why We Can)

Apple’s standard warranty and optional AppleCare do not cover liquid damage so you will be paying.

Apple do not repair at the component level and have strict rules on what is replaced. In every case of liquid damage they’ll quote for replacement of your logic board, keyboard and trackpad — without even testing to see what survived.

The logic board is by far the most expensive part that they will replace:

1. Your data will be lost because it is held on chips soldered to the logic board.
2. The logic board is what you paid to upgrade if you had extra memory or storage configured at purchase. Ready to pay for that again?
3. Replacement costs will be extremely high because of their approach. Is their motive to quote high such that you buy a new MacBook instead?
