Modern deskside computers are very modular and a broken one can be ‘repaired’ by a local computer shop without any electronic knowledge by replacing modules until the computer works.

e.g. a new mass produced motherboard might cost £40 so it is never cost effective to repair them.

This is how most computer shops operate. PC modules are so cheap that a profit can be made and rent and salaries paid.

Your local computer shops have great difficulty repairing a Macbook because Apple will not sell parts.

Apple itself places very high prices on repairs [ and fits repaired parts – they dont tell you that].

So local computer shops are completely reliant on the second hand market for spares and so the above approach to repair also works out to be very expensive.

As a qualified electronic engineer I have the advantage that I can repair your logic board as I have designed and built computers at the component level so I can diagnose and repair them at that same level.

This leads to big savings in money and does no damage to the environment [given that Apple says manufacturing a Macbook generates 350kg of greenhouse gases].

So choose your repair provider carefully as they differ greatly

My offering:

  • If you have a failed logic board I remove it from the case and inspect it with a microscope both visually and then electronically on both sides with reference to circuit diagrams to identify the fault and then provide you with a quote for repair.
  • I work on a ‘No Fix – No Fee’ basis so if I am unsuccessful in repairing your logic board I will not charge you the quoted fee. I can fix 9 out of 10 logic boards.
  • If you choose not to have it repaired I charge a modest inspection fee for the 1 – 2 hours this takes and return the device re-assembled.

Did you know?

  • Apple insist on mandatory replacement of the keyboard & trackpad to liquid damaged MacBooks. This adds a further £300 to the £600 logic board replacement cost.We test them and let you have a say in case you are confident they avoided the liquid.
  • A Free Quote is worth nothing – Yes – exactly what you paid for it! ‘Free Quotes’ are usually guesses with no time spent inspecting the item and so the quote will always be very high to cover the ‘worst case’. Great profit for the shop if the issue is just a faulty £10 ribbon cable!

Should I get my MacBook repaired at Apple?

Possibly but only if it is within warranty and you are sure it did not suffer liquid damage. If there is a tide mark or corrosion they won’t repair under warranty and they will insist on replacing the logic board £600+ and full top case £300+. If it is within warranty and possibly liquid damaged let me clean it up inside before you take it to Apple – that way you are far more likely to get a warranty repair.

At UK Mac Repair we don’t sell new Macs – I have no interest in working with Apple. Apple insist that their approved resellers dumbly follow their rules that only allow them to replace the entire logic board at extreme cost to the customer.

We encourage our customers to keep their older Macs going. There are sound reasons for this – they are built stronger than the latest MacBooks and are more easily upgradeable and repairable.

I am not going to replace my 2015 15inch 16GB memory Macbook any time soon when I can upgrade storage cheaply and easily and if I ever get it seriously wet and corroded I can find a spare logic board relatively cheaply. Try that with the latest Macbooks which could never be called upgradeable because memory and storage are soldered onto the logic board. Anyone can have a liquid spill accident but if you have paid a fortune for a recent Macbook with big memory and big storage and the logic board is so corroded it really does need replacement you can’t unplug the storage [and data] to move it to another board-  you have to pay for it all over again and cope with losing your data. 2 fortunes! All thanks to Apple.

So cherish your older upgradeable Macbook and upgrade it when you feel the need.

    # Service Price
1 Logic board repair – tracing of faults and rectification by component level repair. Complementary preventative maintenance provided (see below). Includes cost of discrete electronic components as required. Does not include cost of replacement of subsystems such as trackpad, screen, keyboard, touchbar etc on the rare occasion faults are traced to these items. from £100 (subject to quote)
2 Preventative Maintenance: Macbooks suck in air to cool the electronic components. Dust particles collect inside restricting the flow of air and reducing its cooling efficiency. Heat builds up and causes components to fail. This service will clean inside your computer to improve the vital cooling efficiency to new standard. £80
